THE WEEK THAT WAS

Two years ago, he won 70 games... last year, he had quite a letdown year, missing the postseason.  Could Jonathan Osborne be back?  He's starting strong, winning his 4th career week with a 9-1 record.  Colorado blasting Colorado State is the only thing that kept him from getting the first ever 10-0 week... same said for Doc Alex Whitley, who came up in 2nd place, also at 9-1.

History Professor Stevie Ray takes the 3rd spot at 8-2, defending DFC Champ James Hawbaker gets 4th, Drew Morris comes in 5th, Scott Latta in 6th, Lt Dan in 7th, rookie Mike "Sunshine Husband" Beirne comes in 8th, David Stamper gets 9th and rounding out the first top ten of the year, Trey Cartledge... all at 8-2.

Also finishing:
8-2: Jennifer Ernst, Aaron Hitchcock, Garrett Cheney, Ryan Sherman, Mikey Nipp
7-3: Chris Croyle, Matt Halpert, Randy Latta, Matt Latta, Hurricane Rhett, Jessica Hawbaker, Brad "Lawdawg" Latta, Drew "Grassman" Warren, Yours Truly, Big Eddy Mac, Tom Johnson, rookie Justin Harrison, returning Justin Glenn, Zack Graves, Tad "The Dynasty" Roose, Daniel Powell
6-4: Brad Ashby, Mark "The Mighty" Gainey, Joey Thornell, Tyler Campbell, Tim Wasyluka, Eddy Jr, Sarah Hasha, DMOsborne, Lori "Sunshine" Beirne, Tommy McLeod
5-5: Mark Warner, Bradley Pinkerton, Jacob Pinkerton

LIES, DARN LIES & STATISTICS

  • With the season being only 10 weeks and not 12 this year, that means that there will be chances to go 10-0... no one has ever won 10 games in a week, nor gone undefeated with 10 games.  Jonathan and Alex are only 2 of 3 people who have won 9 games in a single week.
  • Waaaaay back in DFC III, the final week of the season we did 9 games, due to a tie game the previous week.  Mark Gainey went undefeated that week, scoring the only 9-0 week in history.
  • For you newbies, there are two streaks we keep an eye on... first, the most consecutive weeks going at least .500 and up.  In seasons past, its a 4-4 record or more, while this year, it will be a 5-5 record or up.  The king of this streak, one that I'm not sure will ever be touched, is Tad Roose, who went 45 weeks, starting in Week 5 of DFC IV in 2003 until a 3-5 record in Week 2 of DFC VIII in 2007 broke the streak.
  • Others on this list include the retired Gary "The Idol" Eubanks at 24 weeks, Yours Truly with 22, Justin Glenn with 21, Lori Beirne with 20, and Daniel Powell, Tommy McLeod and Trey Cartledge, all with 19 weeks.
  • The current streak is being held by both James Hawbaker and Jennifer Ernst, who are now at 17 weeks, tied for the 11th longest streak of all time.
  • The other streak is the Above .500 streak, at 5-3 or beyond (this year, 6-4 and up)... its much more rarified air, with Matt Latta holding that record at 17 weeks, Yours Truly at 15, Mark Gainey at 14 and Big Eddy at 11 weeks.
  • Ryan Sherman holds the current streak with 7 straight weeks.
  • Including the 4 rookies that have joined the DFC this year--Aaron, Justin H, Mike B and Jacob Pinky--there have been 74 people who have played the game in the Deuce Football Champions.  Counting Week 1 of this season, there have been 1250 games that have been picked, totaling 39,099 total predictions made in the regular season.  Include the playoffs, there have been 41,278 total predictions in the game, for a total record of 23,896 wins and 17,382 losses.
  • Regular Season:  Yours Truly sits atop the all time win list with 765, but Jennifer Ernst, who topped this list for six straight seasons, is 3 back at 762.  Matt Latta has 739, Tommy McLeod has 734, Eddy with 709, Drew with 702, Tom on the verge of 700 at 699, Jonathan at 698, DMOsborne at 696 and Daniel Powell at 694.
  • Important to note, Jonathan sits 1 win above his brother, DMOsborne, who started in Season I.  Jonathan started in DFC II.
  • The next DFC'ers to get to 700 regular season wins is Scott Latta (693), Tad Roose (683), Eddy Jr (682), Mikey Nipp (681) and The Mighty Gainey (679)
  • The Big Wasyluka crossed 600 this week (at 603 now), while Sarah Hasha is next, at 586.
  • Tyler Campbell, DFC XII Champion, is close to 500 at 483, while Zack Graves will be the next to 400 (at 388)
  • Joey Thornell makes his return after a season off with an torn quadriceps, and is at a lifetime regular season total of 285 wins, while Grandy Latta (189) and Bradley Pinkerton (184) is next to 200.

DFC XIV Preseason Chatter

Apologies for the on-again, off-again, on-again status of this season... we've had some issues with Campbell, our 20 month old, and it occurred to me that as the years go by, it might get harder to do.  So this year, we move forward with Season 14.  Also, in some of your responses, I get the sense that this annual football tradition is just as important to you as it is to me... especially those of you who have been here since it started, in 2000.

So let's get 'er done.

I know this is silly, doing this a day before the games go out, and late at night too, but here ya go... you'll find the Divisional Lineup, along with a refresher on last years regular season results... the anticipated Preseason Top 15... plus, a look at those who have left this season, in our In Memoriam section...

THE LINE UP

Quick correction... Joey Thornell is rejoining the league after a year off... so he will re-join the North Division.  Its not in here right now because its late, and I didn't want to have to redo the page

Here's what it looks like, with James Hawbaker as the reigning DFC Champion, and Trey Cartledge both making the finals, thus getting conferences named after them, as per tradition.  An X means a playoff spot, a Y means a division title, and a Z means they were awarded a first round bye.

ROOKIES

We have four rookies this year joining the ranks of the DFC Legend...

Justin Harrison... father of Eli, married to Mary, big Alabama fan.  Will join the North Division
Aaron Hitchcock... father of Seth, married to Elizabeth.  Alabama fan, I think.  Will join the Hawbaker Central
Jacob "Pinky" Pinkerton... JUCO Transfer, brother of former Rookie of the Year and reigning West Division champ Bradley Pinkerton.  Will be in the South Division
Mike Beirne... hubby of Lori "Sunshine" Beirne, the DFC X Champion.  Wanted to play to create some in-house rivalry because he "didn't like the way Lori played."  Lori simply said, "Look at my championship."  Not featured in the above standings, as.... well, I forgot to put him in.  He'll likely join the East Division.

And making his triumphant return after a 6 year absence...

Justin Glenn... father of many, married to Jennifer, connected and fell in love on the floor of The Deuce way back in the day... played in DFC II thru DFC VII, compiling an overall 338-230 record.  Carried a 4 season playoff streak, from DFC III thru VI.  Won the DFC North in DFC III, and after a move to the DFC Central, won that division in DFC V.  Welcome back, Justin... to the Central you go...

IN MEMORIAM

This season, we lose three...

Tebe Shaw... 7 seasons... lifetime 398-290 record, ranked 24th all time... 1 playoff appearance in DFC VII.  Hall of Fame bound?  Unlikely.  Solid career, but nothing outstanding

John Wolf... 3 seasons... lifetime 166-122 record, ranked 45th all time... 0 playoff appearances... Individual Awards:  Won the DFC XII Best Season Tiebreak Award... Hall of Fame bound?  No.  Though its worth nothing John improved 2-3 wins each year he participated.

Justin Fisher... 6 seasons... lifetime 325-268 record, ranked 30th all time... 1 playoff appearance in DFC VIII... Hall of Fame Bound?  No. Decent career record, but could never break through after his first postseason berth
