THE WEEK THAT WAS
The DFC, in its 23 seasons, has seen 87 people try their hand at being the best around in picking football winners, and while some have long careers before retiring (Matt "The Mad Scientist" Halpert put in 12 years and won a title before calling it quits 4 years ago) and some join us for a year or two (think Willis "Tootie" Watkins or Gary "The Idol" Eubanks), and some leave for a bit and make their returns.

Such is the case with David Tuck, aka "What tha Tuck", spending two seasons, DFC XI and XII before walking away, and then coming back 9 seasons later (he's on season 2 of his current run).

That's a long historical sidebar DFC way of simply saying that with Tuck's return, he chalks up a much needed weekly victory -- still not enough to put him in the playoff hunt for his first ever postseason appearance just yet, but it definitely helps his case.

David "What Tha" Tuck wins the week at 8-2, for only his second weekly win, and in first since Week 3 of DFC XI (2011).

For all that hullaballoo about Tuck's win, #s 2, 3, and 4 also scored 8-2 records, including Tad "The Dynasty" Roose, Danny "3D" Powell, and Hurricane Rhett Barnett respectively.

The rest of the Top 10 finished at 7-3, with Mikey "High" Nipp in 5th, Yours Truly in 6th, Lt Dan "Magic Legs" Sellers in 7th, Jacob "Pinky the Pinky" Pinky and Lil Stevie Ray tie for 8th, and DMO and The Big Wasyluka tied for 10th.

Also finishing:

LIES, DARN LIES, & STATISTICS
  • Let's talk playoffs... streaks, wins, losses, failures, and all in between. This is always good, especially for the newbies who I sometimes am not sure know how extensive this stupid game actually is
  • Most playoff appearances:  Drew Morris with 18... Big Eddy McB has 15, as does Mark "The Mighty" Gainey and Yours Truly... Tommy "The Highlander" McLeod has 14... and Jennifer Enrst has 11
  • All time best playoff streak, however, belongs to Mark "The Mighty" Gainey, making the postseason for 8 straight years from his rookie season in DFCIII to DFCX, then missing it in DFCXI, only to return in DFC XII and XIII.
  • Also impressive is that Mark Gainey "played", or picked, 768 regular season games to begin his career before missing the playoffs in DFC XI, and to begin a career, no one is even close.
  • As for current playoff runs, back to Drew "Slash" Morris, who has made it each of the last five seasons and looking like he'll get his 6th straight playoff berth.
  • He shares that run with Matthew Pinkerton, who is also looking for his 6th straight playoff berth -- and his streak would be more impressive if he hadn't missed the postseason in his sophomore season in DFC XVII. Making it his rookie year of DFC XVI, Matt would being trying to tie Gainey's streak of 8 consecutive appearances.
  • Jonathan Osborne has made it the last four seasons, while Yours Truly is looking for my fourth straight this year.
  • Now... let's talk futility... I gotta hand it to those who continue to return for another shot at glory, those with long careers and only fleeting glimpses of life after Week 10... those like Chris Croyle, who's 15 seasons in the DFC is seeing him edge closer to the Top 25 All Time Win List... but only once in the postseason (DFC XIX) -- fyi, I'm glad you keep coming back.
  • Danny "3D" Powell has been here since Day 1, but has only seen the postseason four times (DFC III, DFC VI, DFC VII, and DFC XII) though he's in a prime position to make it this season. Not counting this season, thats 960 games since his last shot at the title.
  • Tom Johnson is another who's now 23 years in the league has only resulted in postseason berths in DFC IV and V and again in DFC XI.  If you are doing your math, that's 1,056 games since his last postseason berth.
  • Then, there is Mikey Nipp... made the four person DFC postseason in DFCI, then returned in DFC III and DFC V in 2004.  And since then... 1,632 games have gone by, not counting this year, and nada. He currently has the record for longest since his last playoff appearance.
  • To start a career, however, look no further than Young Garrett Cheney, who's rookie season had him at 64 wins in a hugely competitive season... and in Week12 (DFC didnt go to a 10 week season until later), he sat at 63-25, and literally needed a 2-6 week or better to get into the playoffs OR needed Chris "Wookiee" Fulaytar to lose at least 2 games.  The Wookiee, who had previously won the title in DFCIII, limped to the end, but the went berzerker and finished 8-0 for Week 12.
  • No matter, Garrett only needed 2-6 or better. And... he went 1-7, knocking Garrett out of the playoff hunt, sliding Wookiee into the final spot, where he then went 8-0 again (his 19 straight wins over three weeks is still a record), and went on to win his 2nd championship.
  • And Garrett? He's also now at 1,632 games to start his career with nary a postseason appearance.
  • Finally, shout out to Jacob Pinkerton, who started this here sport in DFC XIV (2014) and has yet to make the playoffs, sitting at 864 games coming into this season. He's having a career year, and might break that streak after all.

THE WEEK THAT WAS
From the category of "I hope I don't jinx the poor bloke", but Daniel "3D" Powell hasn't made the postseason since DFC XII, way back in 2011... but he made a big statement today, winning this week, his 7th overall in his career and his 2nd this season, with a 7-1 mark and super close to nailing the TB game.

Coming in tied for 2nd is Garrison "The Pride of Sandy Springs" Ryfun and Tad 'The Dynasty" Roose, with Zack "The Attack" Graves in 4th, all at 7-1.

Jeni Ernst takes 5th with 6-2, as does the rest of the Top 10... Aussie Nate Johnston gets 6th... Tommy "The Highlander" McLeod is in 7th, tied with Tyler "The Self Proclaimed Sexy Beast of the DFC" Campbell... and tied for 9th and wrapping up the Top 10, both Lt Dan "Magic Legs" Sellers and Yours Truly, all get 6-2.

Also finishing:

TIE BREAK DROP! Every year after Week Four, the TB Drop comes into place. It will eliminate your worst TB of the year, factoring in the other weeks besides that.  The only way that will come back into play is at the end of the season IF and ONLY IF there are two tied in all standings -- the worst TB drop will be added back in for that week only, to determine playoff spots/seedings

DFC XXIII: Week Four RESULTS

THE WEEK THAT WAS

It's been crazy times for the Pinky family, as the only Pinkerton of the four with a DFC Title, Mitchell, is at the bottom of the standings.  Bradley, former division winner is middling in the middle. And Jacob Pinky, perennial also-ran, is having a career year... though I'm sure I just jinxed him.

All that said... Matthew "Pinky the Eldest" Pinky takes the week, with a stellar 9-1 record, his fourth in his long career.  Coming in 2nd, Aussie Nate Johnston at 8-2, with Tommy "The Highlander" McLeod in 3rd, and the aforementioned Bradley "Pinky the Wiser" Pinky in 4th, DMO in 5th, and Drew "Slash" Morris in 6th -- all at 8-2

The rest of the top 10 ended up at 7-3, including Brad "The Bald One" Ashby at 7th, Yours Truly in 8th, and in a three way tie to round out the Top 10, Big Eddy Mc, Lil Eddy Mc, and Tyler "SPSBotDFC" Campbell.

LIES, DARN LIES, & STATISTICS
Here comes the random numbers and facts, taken directly from The Massive DFC History Spreadsheet, that are all true...

  • First up, as a reminder, the current top spot in regular season wins totals 1300 wins, and hit that number  this week.  Who is this, you might ask?  Yours Truly.  1,300 wins in the regular season over 23 seasons.  Self brag? Yep.
  • Your top five in this category - Tommy McLeod (1262)... Jeni Ernst (1260)... Drew Morris (1252)... and Big Eddy McB (1245).
  • A few milestones hit in the 3 weeks of this season so far -- David Mark Osborne crossed 1200 wins, and sitting at 1,205, he's one of only 8 to do so (besides the top five I just listed, you have Jon Osborne (1224) and Mark Gainey (1222))
  • The next two likely to hit 1200 in the next few weeks are Eddy McBroom Jr (1185) and Tad Roose (1181).  Remember, this is REGULAR season wins -- we'll talk All Time Wins in an upcoming LDL&S section
  • Michael Nipp finally hit 1100 this season, and Tyler Campbell looks to be the next to hit 1000 wins for his career, as he's sitting at 982.
  • Trey Cartledge got the 900 mark so far (912)... and despite his worst effort, Young Garrett Cheney has stumbled over 900, now at 904...
  • Other milestones of note... Zack Graves is 10 wins away from hitting 900 for his career...
  • There have been 87 people who've played this little game of ours over the last 23 years. If you want to be in the Top 50 all time, a retired Bill "Atlanta" Seybolt sits at 227 wins.  Randy Latta, active, is your #30, with 718 wins regular season.   Brad Latta sits at #25 with 775, and the aforementioned Zack Graves sits at #20 all time.
  • Rising through Week 3: Jacob Pinky, 4 games over .500 this far into the season... Drew Morris, the defending DFC Champ not missing a beat and at #1... Daniel Powell, spent this entire season, all 3 weeks, in the top 10
  • Falling through Week 4: Garrison Ryfun, the pride of Kennesaw, follows up a stellar rookie season with a rough start... Tim Wasyluka, the defending South Division Champ has really stumbled out of the gate... Matty Pinky, watching 2 of his brothers dominate him in the ratings

THE WEEK THAT WAS
The NFL is known as the great equalizer, and it truly was this week... truthfully, it was somewhat of a disaster for nearly everyone -- but this is why we play... er, pick... the games...

While Drew "The Grassman" Warren notched his fourth career win (and first since DFC XX Week 2 in 2019), he did it with a wholly unimpressive 6-4... it was the 2nd worst weekly win since Lt Dan "Magic Legs" Sellers stumbled to a weekly win last season with a 5-5 mark... ironically, also Week 2.

In fact, except for 10th place, the entire top ten was 6-4... beginning with Tommy McLeod in 2nd, Mark "The Mighty" Gainey in 3rd, Brad "Lawdawg" Latta in 4th, Bradley "Pinky the Wiser" Pinky in 5th, and then Lil Stevie Ray, James "The Pick Maker" Hawbaker, Jacob Roth (from Wyoming) and Aussie Nate Johnson in 6th through 9th.

Finishing up the Top 10, at 5-5, is one DMOsborne.

Also finishing:

5-5: Chris "The Wookiee Berserker" Fulaytar... Grandy Latta... Drew // Morris... Jonny Oz... Dan "Magic Legs" Sellers... Hurricane Rhett... Big Tom J... Yours Truly... David "What Tha" Tuck...

4-6: Mikey "Low" Nipp... Zack "The Attack" Graves... The Big Wasyluka... Tad "The Dynasty" Roose... Matty "Pinky the Elder" Pinky... Tyler "The Self Proclaimed Sexy Beast of the DFC" Campbell... Eddy Jr... Jacob "Pinky the Pinky" Pinky... Chris "Yo Teach" Croyle...

3-7:  Jeni Ernst... Garrison "Pride of Noccalula Falls" Ryfun... Danny "3D" Powell... Trey "The Answer" Cartledge... Big Eddy McB

2-8: Young Garrett... Mitchell "Pinky the Youngest" Pinky... Brad "The Bald One" Ashby

THE WEEK THAT WAS
Strong start for one Daniel Powell, who does have a habit of starting fast and fading in the stretch, but a 9-1 Week One is solid.  It's Danny "3D" Powell's first weekly win since Wk7 in DFC XV (2014).

James "The Pick Maker" Hawbaker grabs second at 8-2, with Trey "The Answer" Cartledge gets third at 7-3.  Lil Stevie Ray comes in 4th, Tad "The Dynasty" Roose in 5th, getting 6th is Drew // Morris, in 7th is David "What Tha" Tuck, and Big Tom Johnson takes 8th, all at 7-3.

Nailing the TB guess is both Hurricane Rhett and Dan "Magic Legs" Sellers, both finishing at 6-4, enough for 9th and 10th.
