THE WEEK THAT WAS

The Georgia/Tennessee game was huge, not only in that Georgia won, but also the total points, as TB meant a ton this week.  Had Tennessee pulled it out with the same score, Mikey Nipp jumps in... but with the loss, he was tossed. Conversely, DMOsborne found himself in the Final Four for the first time since DFCVI, back in 2005, due to the Georgia win.

Here's how it breaks down...

YOUR FINAL FOUR

1. Matty "Pinky the Elder" Pinky - 8-2 (nailed TB at 0)
2. Mark "The Mighty" Gainey - 8-2 (off by 2 pts at TB)
3. Steven "The Principal" Ray - 8-2 (off by 5 on TB)
4. DMOsborne - 7-3 (off by 1 on TB)

THE REST... now eliminated
5. Coach DiBello - 7-3 (off by 10 on TB)
6. Yours Truly - 6-4 (off by 2)
7. Mikey Nipp - 64- (off by 3)
8. Tommy "The Highlander" McLeod - 5-5 (off by 1)
9. Jacob "Pinky the Pinky" Pinky - 5-5 (off by 3)
10. Lt Dan "Magic Legs" Sellers - 5-5 (off by 7)

Congrats to the Final Four... and to the Separated Six... thank you for a fantastic season...

THE WEEK THAT WAS
He's been touching the bottom of the standings most of the season in what could be counted a "rebuilding year" - but not only did he pick up his 11th weekly win of his career, but Jonathan Osborne gave us the only undefeated week in the ENTIRE season -- 10-0 not only pulls him out of the cellar, it tosses him right into the DFC25 Scramble mix... more on that later.

The same can be said for Eddy McB Jr, moving from the middle of the pack into the top 12 overall - Eddy Jr finishes 2nd at 8-2, while DMOsborne gets 3rd at 7-3.

Drew "The Grassman" Warren also has an opportune week at 7-3 for 4th, with Big Tom Johnson in 5th, Tommy "The Highlander" McLeod in 6th, Tim "The Big" Wasyluka in 7th, David "What Tha" Tuck in 8th, and Coach DiBello in 9th -- all at 7-3.

Rounding out the Top Ten for the Week, at 6-4 is Jacob "Pinky the Pinky" Pinky.

also finishing:

4-6: Roth from Wyoming... Aussie Nate Johnston

2-8: Danny "3D" Powell

THE WEEK THAT WAS
Once in the running for The GOAT, Mark "The Mighty" Gainey, a 22 year veteran of The DFC, has seen his legendary status slow a little over the years, though 2 championships - DFC IX and XVIII) are nothing to snivel at!  Either way, Gainey picks up his 11th career weekly win, and first since Wk 10 of DFC XXII, and right on time, as the race for the DFC Scramble heats up!

Mikey "The Future of the DFC" Nipp's career year continues strong, coming in at #2 for the week at 9-1, while Aussie Nate and Garrison "The Pride of Tybee Island" Ryfan both get much needed 3rd and 4th place finishes, also at 9-1.

David "What The" Tuck takes 5th, Tyler "TSPSBotDFC" Campbell in 6th, James "Almost the Playoff Maker" Hawbaker in 7th, DMOsborne and Eddy Jr tie for 8th, and rounding out the Top 10, a tie between The 2 time defending champ Zack "The Attack" Graves and Bradley "Pinky the Wiser" Pinky, all at 8-2.

LIES, DARN LIES, AND STATISTICS

Lets talk playoffs!!  First, here is the Top 10 All Time Playoff Records:

  1. Drew "Slash" Morris - 185-95
  2. Big Eddy McBroom - 175-90
  3. Mark "The Mighty" Gainey - 172-96
  4. Yours Truly - 160-103
  5. Tommy "The Highlander" McLeod - 123-95
  6. Tad "The Dynasty" Roose - 119-70
  7. Matt "The Mad Scientist" Halpert - 118-59 (retired)
  8. Jenni "Texas" Ernst - 107-80
  9. Steven "The Principal" Ray - 100-76
  10. James "The Playoff Maker" Hawbaker - 99-44

In 11th spot is the retired, and DFC X champ, Lori "Sunshine Beirne (the only chick to take home a title, by the way), with a 96-67 record.  Trey "The Answer" Cartledge has 94 wins, while Zack "The Attack" Graves has 89 playoff wins.

Trey has had a down season, so he likely won't add to this total, but Zack can possibly get to 100 wins with a strong run, or at least get to the 11th spot on the list

Now let's look at MOST playoff appearances - this does NOT count this season

  1. Drew Morris - 19 (currently on a 7 season playoff streak)
  2. Tommy McLeod - 17 (currently on a 3 season playoff streak)
  3. Yours Truly - 17 (currently on a 5 season playoff streak)
  4. Big Eddy McBroom - 15 (last appearance DFC XXI)
  5. Mark Gainey - 15 (last appearance DFC XXI)
  6. Jonathan Osborne - 13 (last appearance DFC XXIII)
  7. Jennifer Ernst - 11 (last appearance DFC XXI)
  8. Steven Ray - 10 (currently on a 5 season playoff streak)
  9. Tad Roose - 9 (last appearance DFC XXIII)
  10. James Hawbaker - 9 (last appearance DFC XXIII)
  • While I've called Mikey Nipp "the future champion" in jest, it's important to note how big of a deal this season is for him -- he sits at 43rd on the playoff list, with a 12-12 record. His last playoff appearance was in DFC V, back in 2004.  The last time he made the playoffs, Twitter, the iPhone, Netflix streaming and YouTube didn't exist.
  • At the conclusion of this season, that means Michael Nipp would have gone 1,912 games between playoff appearances.  Since he has clinched his division, that number is definite.
  • The new record will fall to Tom Johnson, who's last playoff berth was in DFC XI in 2010. If he does not work his way into the playoffs this season, he will have a current streak of 1,336
  • The other record that you don't want is "most games to start your career before a playoff appearance"... and that goes to none other than Garrett Cheney, who at the end of this season with 1,980 games... he began his career in DFC V, and has yet to make a playoff appearance.
For the record... the DFC25 Scramble will NOT count as a playoff appearance, and while it wont be added to your regular season total, it will be added to your overall career wins and losses. Its a quirk.

He's the one DFC'er I've never actually met, yet has become a staple in the league (he's in his 16th year and is one of the top 25 winningest players ever) -- Dan Sellers, aka Lt Dan, aka Lt Dan "And His May-gik Legs" Sellers, puts up an 8-2 record, and gets his 5th weekly win of his career, his first since Week 2 of DFCXXII.  He's in the West Division, which until the last few weeks has been an abject disaster... but Big Eddy McBroom also gets 8-2, and takes 2nd for the week, while his son, Eddy Jr, gets 3rd at 8-2.

Two-time defending champ Zack "The Attack" Graves takes 4th at 7-3, with original DFC'ers Tommy "The Highlander" McLeod and DMO tying for 5th.  Steven "The Principal" Ray takes 7th, Matty "Pinky the Elder" Pinky in 8th, and tying for 9th, Tad "The Dynasty" Roose and The Big Wasyluka, all at 7-3.

DFC25 Week Five RESULTS

THE WEEK THAT WAS
Tyler Campbell, who in fact did declare himself "The Sexy Beast of the DFC" (likely at a time when he was a more boisterous teen versus the married father of 3 he is now), won a championship in DFCXII, back in 2011.  And yet, he's only had two weekly wins in his career -- first in DFCVI (Week 10) and then Week 4 DFCXVII (2016).  And 75 weeks later... Tyler pulls another one, going 9-1, barely getting past Tad "The Dynasty" Roose, who landed in 2nd at 9-1, who edged out DMOsborne at 9-1, for 3rd.

Lil Eddy McB finishes in 4th at 8-2, and also 8-2 are Big Tom J and Matty "Pinky the Elder" Pinky tying for 5th and Roth From Wyoming and Mikey "Future Champ" Nipp tying for 7th.

Young Garrett Cheney ends up 9th at 7-3, and Mark "The Mighty" Gainey in 10th at 7-3.

Also finishing:
7-3: Lt Dan "Magic Legs" Sellers... Drew // Morris... Hurricane Rhett... Trey "The Answer" Cartledge... Steven "The Principal" Ray... Danny "3D" Powell

6-4: David "What The" Tuck... James "The Prediction Maker" Hawbaker... Yours Truly... Tommy "The Higlander" McLeod... Drew "The Grassman" Warren... Garrison "The Pride of Hiawassee" Ryfun... Big Eddy McB... Jonathan "Oz" Osborne... Jacob "Pinky the Pinky" Pinkerton... Jenny "Sunny Days" Ernst

4-6: Aussie Nate Johnston... Mitchell "Pinky the Younger" Pinky... The Big Wasyluka... Chris "YO TEACH" Croyle... Matt "The Coca Cola Cowboy" Mink

THE WEEK THAT WAS
Because of the longevity of the league and those in it, we don't have a lot of "First time weekly winner", but this week we have just that... Aussie Nate Johnston, the DFC Thunder from Down Under, takes a very, very rough week for everyone, winning the week at 7-3.  It was the first time a week was won with a 7-3 record since David "What Tha" Tuck did it in DFC XXIII, Wk 7, in 2022.

The Coca-Cola Cowboy, Matt Mink gets 2nd with a 6-4 record, Tommy "The Highlander" McLeod gets 3rd, Yours Truly in 4th, Mitchell "Pinky the Younger" Pinky in 5th, and in a three way tie for 6th, DMO, Matty "Pinky the Elder" Pinky and Jacob "Pinky the Pinky" Pinky.

Finishing up the Top 10, Tyler "The DFC Sexy Beast (self proclaimed) Campbell at 6-4 in 9th, and Mikey "High" Nipp at 5-5 in 10th.

LIES, DARN LIES, & STATISTICS

  • Contrary to popular belief, I don't have ALL the stats -- some are hard to keep with over 25 years, but I can say that this week was a disaster for the ages... out of 34 DFC'ers this year, only 9 people had a winning record and 2 were at .500... the rest took a hit.
  • For the first 12 seasons, we did 12 weeks, with 8 games per week. Since DFCXIII, we've done 10 weeks, equaling 96 games (8 weeks at 10 games, 2 weeks at 8 games... this year is the first time we've scheduled 100 games, only for the historic 25th year).
  • All of that is to say, Aussie Nate winning the week at 7-3 is somewhat rare air, as out of 113 weeks since the beginning of DFC XIII, there were only EIGHT times previous when someone won the week with only 7 games (out of a 10 game weekend) -- Lori "Sunshine" Beirne, Yours Truly, Matty "Pinky the Elder" Pinky, Tad "The Dynasty" Roose, David "What Tha" Tuck, James "The Prediction Maker" Hawbaker, and doing it twice, Tommy "The Highlander" McLeod.
  • If you are wondering if anyone won a week with a dismal 6-4 record, the answer is yes.  Drew "The Grassman" Warren won Week 2 in DFC XXIII... and yes, one 5-5 record got Lt Dan "Magic Legs" Sellers a weekly win in Week 2 of DFC XXII.
  • Okay! Let's look at all time stats... Mark "The Mighty" Gainey hit 1500 wins lifetime (1510) as did Tommy "The Highlander" McLeod (1509), good enough for 4th and 5th, respectively, all time.   Jeni Ernst is next, at 1460.
  • Two time defending DFC Champ Zack "The Attack" Graves just hit 1100 wins (1102) and Steven Ray hit the 1000 mark (now at 1005). Next to 1000, Rhett Barnett, though it's a season or two away, as he's at 626.
  • Lt Dan Sellers just hit 900 exactly, while Garrison "The Pride of Vidalia" Ryfun is a little bit behind, and will get to 200 wins likely next week (he's at 197)
  •  More milestones approaching... DMOsborne is 17 away from 1400 at 1383... Daniel Powell is at 1286, close to 1300...
  • Finally... streaks were broken, as a bad week for everyone kills that .500+ and .500 streak.  The current .500 or better streak?  Yours Truly at 15 weeks, followed by DMOsborne at 14 weeks.
  • Going over .500 each week?  Current streak is held by Tyler "The Self Proclaimed Sexy Beast of the DFC" Campbell... at three weeks.

THE WEEK THAT WAS
It's been a long road full of rough starts for one Michael Nipp, who has been around since the very beginning, but hasn't seen the playoffs since 2004, but this season has given him something dangerous... hope.  Been a strong start for the Nippster, as he wins a rough, rough week for everyone, at 7-3.

He wins the 12th week of his career, his first since Week 11 of DFC XXIII, (and only his 2nd since DFC XIII in 2012).

PLAYOFF GLANCE
It's only Week 3, but here's a glance at how the postseason would roll out if everything stayed the same (which it won't, obviously).  To clarify, the Top Eight RECORDS advance to the Playoffs -- if there is a division winner who isn't in the top 8, they automatically enter at the 9th seed.  Then everyone ranked up until 25, as long as they reach the minimum wins (52) will go into the DFC25 Scramble

THE WEEK THAT WAS
Matty Pinky the Elder" Pinky, who has never won a championship, but is a consistent contender, has picked up where he left off from his Final Four appearance last year, this time winning Week 2 of DFC25 -- his 7th weekly win in his career, and the 2nd year in a row he's won Week 2 at 8-2.

LIES, DARN LIES, & STATISTICS
Not a whole lot to report this week, but...

  • Congrats to Garrett Cheney for getting to 1000 victories all time... currently sitting at 1002 - which is also his regular season wins all time, because Garrett also holds the distinct honor of playing DFC the most weeks without a playoff appearance.
  • He was a rookie in DFCV, he's been in 219 weeks of competition... and never has had a single playoff appearance.  Its DFC Lore that in 2004 (DFCV), he needed to win only 2 of 10 games for the final playoff seed... if he only one 1 game, then the next one up, Chris "Wookiee" Fulaytar, had to go undefeated to make it.  Well, Garrett when 1-9.  And Wookiee went undefeated, the went 10-0 in the first round of the playoffs and eventually won the whole season.
  • Also, the +.500 streak I mentioned last week, meaning consecutive weeks going 6-4 or better, with DMOsborne and Tad "The Dynasty" Roose each at 6 weeks.  DMO went 5-5 this week, but Tad scored a 7-3, so seven weeks it is!

LIES, DARN LIES, AND STATISTICS
("There are three kinds of lies: lies, damn lies, and statistics" - Mark Twain)

  • Welcome back to the 25th year! I've made quite a hullabaloo regarding the fact we've done this for a quarter of a century, but so far, after Week One, we've had 2,289 games to pick, and I've logged a total of 78,984 picks from everyone who has participated - and 83,640 if you count playoffs.  And the rumors of me having a massive spreadsheet with all the numbers are true. I actually have an Excel document for each season, and then an All Time document... however, I am missing DFCVIII's records. No idea how to get that back, and while I have the season totals (final standings and such) the week to week info is lost to history.
  • And while there are no rookies this year, we've had a total of 90 people, including 16 one-and-done DFC'ers.  The best of those was our buddy Vic Paschal, who in DFCII (2001), garnered a 59-45 all time record. So if you have won more than 57 games in your career, you'll know that you are at least 73rd or higher in the all time rankings... which is where Coach DiBello finds himself, with a full season, plus one week, record of 64-42 career.
  • The Coca-Cola Cowboy himself, Matt Mink, has a win total of 59, after 11 weeks, so is 4 wins away from taking 74th all his own
  • Farther up the list, looking at all time wins, Mark "The Mighty" Gainey is a mere 3 wins away from clocking 1500 lifetime wins, while Tommy at 1491 is 9 away.
  • Congrats to Tad "The Dynasty" Roose for crossing the 1400 win total (1406) and now Jonathan "Oz" Osborne also doing so (now at 1401)
  • Counting regular season, Trey "The Answer" Cartledge just hit 1000 wins (1008) and Zack "The Attack" Graves is literally at 1000 regular season wins as of this week.
  • Zack and Trey started three seasons AFTER Young Garrett Cheney... but props to Garrett who is 3 wins away from getting to 1000 as well.
  • Let's talk streaks!  I call it the "DiMaggio Streak", that being when Tad Roose went 45 weeks going .500 or higher - from Week 6 in DFC IV to Week 2 in DFC VIII, he went 4-4 or 5-5 or better. By contrast, 2nd on that list is Yours Truly, at 32 weeks (from 2013-2016). I'm not sure Tad's streak will ever be broken, honestly.
  • Current streaks?  Yours Truly at 21 weeks, Tommy McLeod at 18 weeks, which incidentally are tied for 6th and 11th all time respectively, and David Mark Osborne and Bradley Pinkerton, both at 11 weeks.
  • Even tougher, the +.500 streak (meaning not 4-4 or 5-5, but an actual winning record)... the record is held by Matt Latta at 17 weeks, from about 18 years ago, while the current active streak is both the aforementioned Tad and DMOsborne, both at 6 weeks currently. Good luck on that.
