LIES, DARN LIES, AND STATISTICS
("There are three kinds of lies: lies, damn lies, and statistics" - Mark Twain)

  • Welcome back to the 25th year! I've made quite a hullabaloo regarding the fact we've done this for a quarter of a century, but so far, after Week One, we've had 2,289 games to pick, and I've logged a total of 78,984 picks from everyone who has participated - and 83,640 if you count playoffs.  And the rumors of me having a massive spreadsheet with all the numbers are true. I actually have an Excel document for each season, and then an All Time document... however, I am missing DFCVIII's records. No idea how to get that back, and while I have the season totals (final standings and such) the week to week info is lost to history.
  • And while there are no rookies this year, we've had a total of 90 people, including 16 one-and-done DFC'ers.  The best of those was our buddy Vic Paschal, who in DFCII (2001), garnered a 59-45 all time record. So if you have won more than 57 games in your career, you'll know that you are at least 73rd or higher in the all time rankings... which is where Coach DiBello finds himself, with a full season, plus one week, record of 64-42 career.
  • The Coca-Cola Cowboy himself, Matt Mink, has a win total of 59, after 11 weeks, so is 4 wins away from taking 74th all his own
  • Farther up the list, looking at all time wins, Mark "The Mighty" Gainey is a mere 3 wins away from clocking 1500 lifetime wins, while Tommy at 1491 is 9 away.
  • Congrats to Tad "The Dynasty" Roose for crossing the 1400 win total (1406) and now Jonathan "Oz" Osborne also doing so (now at 1401)
  • Counting regular season, Trey "The Answer" Cartledge just hit 1000 wins (1008) and Zack "The Attack" Graves is literally at 1000 regular season wins as of this week.
  • Zack and Trey started three seasons AFTER Young Garrett Cheney... but props to Garrett who is 3 wins away from getting to 1000 as well.
  • Let's talk streaks!  I call it the "DiMaggio Streak", that being when Tad Roose went 45 weeks going .500 or higher - from Week 6 in DFC IV to Week 2 in DFC VIII, he went 4-4 or 5-5 or better. By contrast, 2nd on that list is Yours Truly, at 32 weeks (from 2013-2016). I'm not sure Tad's streak will ever be broken, honestly.
  • Current streaks?  Yours Truly at 21 weeks, Tommy McLeod at 18 weeks, which incidentally are tied for 6th and 11th all time respectively, and David Mark Osborne and Bradley Pinkerton, both at 11 weeks.
  • Even tougher, the +.500 streak (meaning not 4-4 or 5-5, but an actual winning record)... the record is held by Matt Latta at 17 weeks, from about 18 years ago, while the current active streak is both the aforementioned Tad and DMOsborne, both at 6 weeks currently. Good luck on that.
